Simple Product:

The first product type that we will discuss here is a simple product. As the name indicates pretty clearly, a Simple product is a single or standalone product with a single shelf or stock-keeping unit (SKU) and no product variable. Simple products are often considered the most

Products that do not have any choice of sizes or colors can be considered as a simple product. Simple products can be customized with grouped, bundles, or configurable products. Magento 2 offers a simple product type for merchants and vendors, which is widely chosen and useful.

Configurable Product:

Magento 2 offers a configurable product that is nothing but many simple products. The collection of various simple products with different options of colors and sizes comes under this category. Generally, a drop-down menu can be used to set attributes like size and color as separate SKUs. This makes inventory tracking easy for every single variation available in the store.

Configurable products are made up of numerous simple products. To understand this better, we can take the example of clothes. Suppose you are selling a shirt that comes in different sizes, namely small, medium, and large, along with multiple colors. So the first thing that needs to be done is creating simple products for each of the different sizes, colors, and shapes

After this, a configurable product needs to be created in the catalog. Under the associated products, the admin needs to select all the products that have been created for different sizes and colors.

This creates the drop-down feature that the customers can use to select attributes according to their needs and requirements. Merchants or vendors can also choose to put different prices for different products or options. Inventory levels can also be added for every simple product and different images according to the customers’ reference set. In such cases, when a particular product is out of stock, for example, the green shirt which is large in size is out of stock or running low, it will show the customer the status of that particular product.

The stock, price, and other characteristics of the products are monitored on a simple level.

The configurable products are often referred to as the parent products and the simple products as child products.

Grouped Products:

Quite often, sellers choose to combine simple products together as a group and offer discounts on them while selling. These are generally goods that have similar features and are generally related to each other.

Grouped products are best for promotional goals and for sales campaigns. For example, the prospect is looking to buy computer peripherals like a mouse, keyboard, etc., they can find such products grouped together and sold as a single unit.

This makes it easier for the customer who wants to buy a combo of four items because it is being done in a single purchase. Moreover, grouped goods generally come at special prices, which turns out to be a lot cheaper than what would have been the cost of buying the items individually. Grouped products are great to attract customers as they can see the benefit and gain from the deal. Sellers often use this technique to catch the eye of customers with exciting deals on grouped products. It is a great way to increase the sales ratio.

Magento 2 offers all the necessary features related to grouping products and monitoring them and keeping track.

Bundle Products:

The term bundle products may sound a lot similar to grouped products, but there is some difference. Bundle products allow the customers to construct the product they need. This is generally applied to a bundle of simple or virtual goods.

Unlike grouped products, in the case of bundled products, the customers can choose any product they want according to their requirements. The customer can select everything from the color to the memory, capacity, etc. Being a seller, you can assign the inventory to each individual item, which will make it visible to the customer and help them with the purchase.

For example, somebody wants to buy a camera, in bundle products they can choose the camera body along with the lens or no lens at all or with professional lenses, no memory cards or memory cards of various storage capacities, extra set of batteries and other related goods all according to their own needs. The customer can select whatever product he needs and bundle them up and make the purchase, which generally costs a lot less than buying each of the items individually.

This is also a very useful way of selling goods that do not have such considerable demand individually.

Downloadable Products:

Downloadable products include products like applications, games, music files, etc., that need to be downloaded. Being a seller, you need to upload the files via the backend server through the admin and input additional information along with the price. However, there remains a risk of hosting the files on another web server, and it is up to Magento to provide a secure and personalized link to every customer.

This type of product may often contain more than one downloadable file, in which case the user needs to download them all. There are no shipping options, obviously, as there’s nothing to ship. Customers can download the files once they have made the purchase and use it thereafter. Magento, however, does not cover digital rights management in any way.

Virtual Products:

Magento 2 virtual products were developed for intangible goods. You can very well understand that virtual products are mainly services like online consulting, various language courses, insurance reservations, etcetera. These are mainly goods that do not need to be shipped, downloaded, or delivered at all. Magento 2 product type offers to sell services that generally do not need any stock management. These days, there is an excellent demand for virtual products, which is why this product type had been developed.

So here we discussed top product types of Magento 2 with examples. It can generally cover most e-commerce needs and is a great platform that the sellers can use. There are, however, some exceptions. Features like rental items and recurring subscriptions are not available. But there are a lot of free and paid extensions that can be used to solve these issues.
